10 Most Iconic Helmets In Anime

There are a lot of helmet-wearing characters across the anime medium. But which helmets have the most striking designs or are extra memorable?

In any form of media, a memorable character design does a lot for the impact a story has on the viewer. And, there are a lot of visual aspects that can make a character extremely memorable such as a nice straw hat, a bright orange jumpsuit, or even the helmet that they wear.

Along the same vein as Luffy's hat, Naruto's ninja jumpsuit, and so on, let's take a look at some of the most iconic helmets in anime over the years, and what makes them so memorable. These can include all types of helmets of course, from armored helmets to bike helmets and more.

First up is an adorable helmet, and it's the one worn by Celty Sturlson in the iconic anime known as Durarara. In Ikebukuro, there are all types of characters, from underground doctors to interact addicts to general transporters. Celty, however, is one of the more…supernatural aspects of the show. For one, she's a Dullahan (AKA a headless Celtic spirit) in disguise and underneath her cat-like motorcycle helmet is nothing but a shadowy smoke-like substance in place of her head.

The reason this helmet is so iconic, other than the fact that it's a motorcycle helmet with cat ears, is simply because Celty is one of the fan-favorite characters in the anime who everyone recognizes as sort of the "poster character" representing the show.

It wouldn't be a series about iconic character designs if Berserk didn't come up in some way. Quite frankly, Berserk's story has a whole plethora of memorable helmets throughout it as each group of knights seems to have their very own armor designs, and there are plenty of monsters and magic items later on in the series with unique helmets as well.

But, out of all the helmets in the series, the two most memorable are the helmet of the Berserker Armor that Guts eventually wears and Griffith's hawk-like helm that eventually becomes part of his body after he turns into Femto. Now, if the series could only get a proper anime adaptation, maybe fans would be able to enjoy the helmets in their entirety.

Next up is less of a main character of their respective anime and more like a fan-favorite side character. Mumen Rider, AKA Satoru, is a C-Class Hero in One Punch Man and is one of the few people who are aware of just how strong Saitama's punches are.

And, the reason that Mumen Rider is so well-known among the fanbase is simply because of how much of a hero he strives to be, despite how painfully average he is. Compared to someone like Genos, Mumen Rider is literally just a guy with a bike, yet he'll always challenge anyone or anything that preys on the weak, even if they could kill him with a single breath, and people love him for that.

Similar to Berserk, Goblin Slayer's helmet is also iconic simply because it's the one seen the most throughout the slew of hyper-violence this story presents. But, unlike Guts, Goblin Slayer is never seen without his helmet (at least not directly seen by the reader or viewer), and this only serves to make his helmet more memorable as people basically think of it as his face. Honestly, most of the time it's better to keep it that way, as longtime Halo fans can likely attest to.

In terms of its design, it's basically just a standard knight's helmet one would see in a medieval or medieval-fantasy setting, but the bit of extra flair with the broken horns on the side and tuft of red hair coming out the top adds just enough of that "wow" factor. Plus, in the moments where Goblin Slayer's red eyes shine through the slits of this helm or when he's playing the deadpan character in the face of someone's joke, the helmet becomes an even stronger image.

To be frank, Made in Abyss (now on its second season) is also a story with a lot of memorable helmets. From the standard cave-diving helmets that the Red Whistles wear, Ozen's Helm (when she wears it), Nanachi's hat/helmet, or even Bondrewd's futuristic helmet. But, out of all of them, the one people are going to see the most when reading or watching Made in Abyss is Reg's.

Reg's simplistic half-circle helmet with the little horns and one big glass lens is just complex enough to be memorable and just simple enough to not feel like it's too busy. And, the fact that the helmet tells Reg how many times he has left to use the Incinerator means that it has some practical function as well.

My Hero Academia is a story overflowing with unique helmets and face covers, as it takes place in a world full of superheroes with brightly-colored costumes. Just to name a few memorable helmets through the series:

But, one of the helmets that stick out the most among all the characters has to be Ida's Helmet in his Ingenium costume. This modified bicycle helmet somehow manages to both look very dorky and extremely cool at the same time, and the biggest problem with it is only that Tenya doesn't seem to wear it very often.

Throughout the hundreds, if not thousands of characters introduced in all the different media related to Gundam, Char Aznable is still one of the most memorable characters. Of course, this has to do with his charming personality and complex character arc over multiple different anime, but it also has a fair amount to do with his design.

Char's helmet, in particular the one he wears in the original Mobile Suit Gundam, is just so incredibly memorable.

Helmets aren't much of a thing in Dragon Ball Z. In fact, the primary piece of technology that people wear on their heads is a Scouter, and that's more of an earpiece than anything. Of course, in a franchise where characters have rapid hair growth or color-changing hair based on their current form, it only makes sense to avoid helmets as they would cover all that up.

But, there is one that sticks out, and it's the helmet worn by Gohan AKA the Great Saiyaman in the future after the Cell Games arc (and in the newest DBZ movie). Even though Gohan eventually replaces the helmet with a white bandana and sunglasses due to armor being banned in most tournaments, this helmet is still one of the more iconic pieces of armor in DBZ's history.

Next up is a bit of a loophole as this is technically both a person's head and a helmet. Alphonse Elric of the Fullmetal Alchemist franchise is one of the most beloved characters and a real sweetheart.

He's a 14 to 15-year-old boy who is actually a gigantic suit of empty steel armor. Alphonse lost his body when he and his brother Edward committed the alchemist taboo by trying to bring their mother back with alchemy. Luckily, Ed managed to seal Alphonse's soul in a nearby suit of armor, but now he's trapped in it.

Lastly, let's talk a bit about football. From the mind of Richiro Inagaki (the writer behind Dr. Stone) is one of his earlier works by the name of Eyeshield 21. These days, Eyeshield 21 is hailed as one of the best Sports manga/anime series of all time, and assuredly one of the funniest.

And, as the name would suggest, the Eyeshield worn by the Devil Bat's number 21 player and main protagonist, Sena Kobayakawa, is a pretty important part of the story. Because Sena wants to hide his identity, the team's captain Hiruma uses an Eyeshield on the helmet to keep his face hidden, and it's this very same eyeshield that eventually earns Sena his moniker.
