Grieving families have gathered at a Buddhist temple to pray and make offerings to the spirits of their deceased toddlers who were killed amid a rampage by a former police officer who shot and slashed them with knives at their day care in northeastern Thailand last week. The mourning family members gathered at Rat Samakee temple on Sunday, sitting in front of the tiny coffins, praying while Buddhist monks around them chanted prayers. Later, they placed trays of food, toys and milk along the outside of the temple walls as offerings to the spirits of their slain children. Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha is expected to attend an evening prayer at one of the temples later Sunday.

Italy defeated the United States 22-10 to open play on the second day of the Women’s Rugby World Cup at Whangarei, New Zealand. Canada beat Wales 41-5 and Wales will face Scotland later Sunday. Top-seeded and tournament favorite England laid down a clear marker in its opening match on Saturday when it scored 14 tries in beating Fiji 84-19. England left no doubt in the minds of any of its opponents that it will take an extraordinary team and performance to prevent them winning the world title for the third time.

Julia started Saturday as a tropical storm, but gained power most of the day and became a Category 1 hurricane shortly before it veered slightly south of San Andres island in the early evening. It is forecast to come ashore in the Bluefields-Laguna de Perlas region before dawn Sunday. The U.S. National Hurricane Center says Julia’s maximum sustained winds had stabilized around 75 mph late Saturday, just over the threshold for a Category 1 hurricane. Forecasters are warning that Julia's rains could cause flash floods and mudslides in parts of Nicaragua, Guatemala and El Salvador.

The game was the 11th edition of Notre Dame’s annual Shamrock Series and marked the first time the Irish faced a fellow FBS Independent since a 44-6 victory over Army in 2016. Andrew Peasley threw two touchdown passes to Treyton Welch and Cameron Stone settled things for Wyoming when he returned an interception 38 yards for a score in the final minute of the Cowboys’ 27-14 victory over New Mexico. Wyoming (4-3, 2-1 Mountain West Conference) led 20-14 when Stone intercepted a Justin Holaday pass on third-and-15 at the New Mexico 45-yard line. New Mexico (2-4, 0-3) jumped out to a 14-0 first-quarter lead on short touchdown runs by Miles Kendrick and Holaday. Welch hit Peasley for a 47-yard touchdown in the second quarter and Wyoming trailed 14-7 at halftime.
