A 68-year-old man died Wednesday after suffering severe head injuries in a bicycle crash in Bergen County, authorities said.

The victim, whose name was not released, was riding north on Spring Valley Road in Park Ridge, headed toward Grand Avenue when the crash apparently occurred near a hill, according to police.

Witnesses told police they heard the crash but didn’t see vehicle traffic in the area, police Capt. Joseph Rampolla told NJ Advance Media.

“All indications are that this was a lone bicyclist crash based on several eyewitnesses,” Rampolla said. “The area of the crash is at the base of a hill.” The bicyclist was not wearing a helmet, police said.

Officers found the man on the ground near Doxey Drive and administered first aid with members of a local ambulance crew. Police then called for a medical helicopter “based on the victim’s head trauma,” Rampolla said.

The helicopter landed in a nearby field at West Ridge Elementary School and the victim was flown to Hackensack University Medical Center, where he later died.

The man’s name was withheld pending notification of relatives, the captain said.
