RAGBRAI Day 6 takes riders from Charles City to West Union

Terrain returns today RAGBRAI pushes to the edge of the Driftless Area, a stretch of unglaciated northeast Iowa  that makes up for all the hills and valleys the central part of the route lacked. Today is just a prelude for the finale, when riders will experience the most prodigious climbs of the week. At least the ideal weather — and tailwinds — will continue.

It's Iowa State Patrol Appreciation Day, so tip your bike helmet to the troopers who've spent the week keeping you safe.

Pass-through towns: Ionia, New Hampton, Waucoma, Hawkeye

Weather: Upper 70s, clear. Wind from the northwest.

Themes: Iowa State Patrol Appreciation Day

Highlights: Say hello to Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, Foghorn Leghorn and the rest of the Looney Tunes crowd in Lawler, where they're the theme. And while you're there, poke your head into the Starlite Ballroom, where there will be a historical display, a photo booth, a full-service bar, a performance by Casey Klein with his signature double-neck guitar and pie, pie, pie and more pie. In Waucoma, hunt for painted rocks hidden throughout the town. And West Union bills itself as the gateway to the Driftless Area.

Entertainment at West Union: Beau Timmerman (country-styled covers) 10 a.m.-noon; The Swing Crew (eclectic acoustic covers) noon-2 p.m.; Bar Flyz (rock covers) 2-4 p.m.; Steven Schroeder (country) 4-5 p.m.; Rolling Thunder (AC/DC tribute) 5:30-7:30 p.m.; Arch Allies (classic rock tribute band) 8-11 p.m.
