When it comes to wearing a bicycle helmet, there are countless reasons for deciding not to wear a protective helmet. "They look silly to me." "They are itchy." "I don't want hat hair!"

Sarah Clark Stuart, executive director of the Greater Philadelphia Cycling League, can’t fully understand, especially as a person who regards wearing a helmet as second nature, similar to wearing a seat belt in a car.

"My reason is that I wear a helmet as a defensive measure," she told Today Store. "Humans make mistakes, sometimes distracted, careless or reckless. When drivers make mistakes, they can be very serious. I want to protect myself in case of a collision. Cyclists also make mistakes. I want to encounter Cyclists, or for that matter, protect themselves from the extremely small possibilities of curbs or light poles."

However, just wearing a helmet is not enough. Stuart says it's important to ensure that you wear the right helmet for a specific activity or sport. There is also a correct way to wear it.

"The helmet should be placed flat on your head, low on your forehead-one or two finger widths above your eyebrows. The side straps have a slider on both straps; a person should be slightly under and in front of the ears. Form a "V" shape. The chin strap should be one [or] two finger widths away from the chin."
